‘Song Cycle of the Moon-Bone’ by the Wonguri-Mandjigai people

I analysed stanzas 10 and 12.

The interconnectedness, significance and relations of East Arnhem Land is important to the Wonguri-Mandjigai people. This is communicated through the Poem: ‘Song Cycle of the Moon-Bone’. The poem as a whole communicates how all the things in East Arnhem Land relate and interconnect by describing how everything goes about their day to day lives and what they do; when, where, how and why. Stanza 10 portrays how a tortoise holding its young, swims at the place of the Dugong. It goes by its everyday life with all the other creatures who live in the area. The stanza describes the shell of the tortoise, with its pretty patterns and designs.

Stanza 12 describes the moon over looking everything else in East Arnhem Land. It shows how the moon starts off as a new moon, then grows larger and rounder until it is a full moon. It represents something which looks after all the other things. It shows how there is a cycle to all things and everything, however noticeable, repeats over and over again.

These two stanzas give you a visual representation. It uses many descriptive words to paint a picture in your head. Stanza 10, paints a picture of a mother tortoise with their young swimming in a lake or river. It makes us think how that is just one thing in a million things that happens all the time in East Arnhem land. Stanza 12, as I have mentioned before, makes us think of an all-knowing moon above us which controls everything underneath it through its moon cycle. It repeats and repeats, just as everything else has a natural order.

All these things conveys the interconnectedness, significance and relations of East Arnhem Land is important to the Wonguri-Mandjigai people.

Year 8 Formative Task

Lord Howe Island; such an amazing place to be,

Its beauty, its peace, its wonder, somewhere to be free.

It has towering mountains, looking far and wide,

Reaching above the clouds, the mountains never end.

How much I love this place, I simply never want to go.

The continuous green of trees sheltering things below,

Animals hiding in the bush like they’re waiting to be found.

Brilliant beaches bordering land, connecting it to the sea,

Oh Lord Howe Island, I want to stay forever,

When I have to leave, I say to myself No, NO, NO!

‘Another Day of Sun’ – La La Land

To what extent has Los Angeles been represented as a city of hope + dreams in the opening scene of La La Land?

Los Angeles has been represented as a city of hope and dreams in the opening scene of La La Land. Many scenes and lines from the song add to this representation in different ways. The scene when the girl is getting out of the car and starts to dance and sing while other join her shows the hope and dreams of LA. Someone may feel like they are one of the only people who feels like they have a huge dream and that they stand out from the crowd but that is not true. We see many people come out of their vehicles to join her which shows that everyone have their own hopes and dreams ever if it doesn’t seem like it. Everyone is unique but similar at the same time.

The scene where everyone is in a mosh and people are solo dancing one by one shows the hopes and dreams of LA through communicating the American Dream. We can see people of all races, gender and nationality getting together, knowing they can come to LA in America and find success in their hopes and dreams no matter who they are. They celebrate this together and show off all their different skills and talents.

The line ‘Another day of sun’ in the song has many meanings. The sun represents all that is good. In particular it represents hope for the future, dreams, happiness, laughter, fun and games, a new day as well as other things. The line goes ‘Another day of sun’. The ‘Another day of’ part of the line means that in LA, America, the sun as well as all it represents is often up and out. It means that there is a new day of the amazing things that the sun represents. These scene and lines all show how the opening scene of La La Land represents LA of being a place of hope and dreams.

Cityscapes: My Experiences

What are some of the most common features of cities?

Cities these days often have tall building and skyscrapers in the most central part of the city. They have suburbs around this central part with small residential housing. They would also have bodies of water in the city whether it be a still bay or lake or a rough, wavy beach. Roads are very common in a city as that would be the easiest way to travel around the city. There would be cars, trucks, taxis, buses, bikes and other vehicles on the road at any given time. You would hear the sound of one of these vehicles zooming past on these roads. There would also obviously have to be water pipes, electrical wires, wifi wires and other infrastructure to allow the city to run smoothly. Schools, universities, colleges, childcares, preschools and other forms of education would be present in a city as well. Safety is important in a large city so fire and police stations as well as hospitals would have to be in a city. Roadwork and other construction sites would also make the city safer and you would be able to hear the noise of a drill, construction vehicle or a crane. The most important part of a city is the people. There would be people everywhere. There would be people walking to get somewhere, doing their jobs, eating at a restaurant or cafe, hanging out with friends or at home. This would generally be the main noise of a city; the constant chatter of thousands or possibly millions of people living their everyday lives.

What do you consider to be crucial in a city?

I consider many things to be crucial in a city. People, being the most important part of a city. Without people, there would be no point of having a city. Cities are supposed to easily support the population of an area in a small space. Another crucial element of a city is safety. We need safety so we do not get hurt. Police stations, fire stations, hospitals, fences, signs and many other things all contribute to our wellbeing and safety. Other crucial things in a city are entertainment, parks, eateries, occupations and businesses.

Using five lines, describe how cities make you feel.

Cities generally make me feel very small, unimportant and insignificant to the world around me. They make me feel like I get lost in my everyday life and don’t know where I am heading. My body feels like I am drowning in a huge lake of people everywhere. I very much dislike cities. They make me feel slightly angry as this is what the world has come to. Cities are big messes of the world.
